ʔak̓uǂni Park, pronounced ah-kooth-nee, opened in the spring of 2024 in the heart of downtown Creston. In the ktunaxa language, ʔak̓uǂni means “journey” or “the act of paddling” and is the origin of the word “kootenay.”
The park was created by the Town of Creston in partnership with the Yaqan Nukiy community, featuring native plant species, a gathering circle, and a large tipi—the first in the Town of Creston in over a century—marking a significant step towards truth and reconciliation.
Located in the centre of Creston's downtown, the park offers parking, benches, and trails that connect to nearby Millennium Park, the Dog Park, the Creston Library to the south, and the Visitor Centre and Grain Elevator to the northwest. The north end hosts the outdoor Creston Valley Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings from 9:00 to 1:00 PM, and serves as overflow parking during the rest of the week, including spaces for EV charging and a bike repair station.
So, visit to enjoy the park, learn about our community's heritage and history, and take the opportunity to explore the rest of Creston.
